Buzz Bars and Dice

How about teaching your family Buzz Bar? Maybe your parents will remember playing it at school like I do.
The rules are
  • count up to or back from 100 in ones
  • when you come to a number you use when counting in fives you replace the number with Buzz
  • when you come to a number you use when counting in tens you say Bar (because these numbers are also used for counting in 5s, they are actually always Buzz Bar )
  • count quickly
If this is getting too easy (did you remember to practise going backwards as well?) then how about playing Chocolate Buzz Bar...
For this version when you come a number that you use for counting in 3s you say Chocolate. So it goes like this
1, 2, chocolate, 4, buzz, chocolate, 7, 8, chocolate, buzz bar, 11, chocolate, 13, 14, chocolate buzz bar
Now that's really tricky!!!

How are you getting on with your dice? If you're needing a new challenge with them then get another ordinary dice or two to add to the game. Are you being tricky when you add the numbers? Here are some things to look out for when you're adding the dice
  • can you see a double or something that's nearly a double like 7+8? (you know double 7 is 14 so 7+8 must be one more)
  • can you see a ten pair like 6+8+4? (6+4=10 now add the 8=18)
Most people need practice taking away or subtracting.
  • write a number between 11 and 100 on a piece of paper
  • roll a dice and subtract that number from the number on the paper
  • make this more challenging by rolling 2 dice and adding them together before you take the answer away from the number on the piece of paper (you number will need to be between 20 and 100 for this version)
Ask your family to play with you and tell you what clever tricks they are using to find out the answer.
Do you want to print out a hundreds board to help you? Here is a link. I'll try to post some new games you can play with your hundreds board later today.
