Thomas A worked out one version of what might be in the box and Jack C had obviously been discussing it at home too.
| The inside of the box - at last! |
- You can see the funnel has a pipe attached to it.
- The pipe leads to a jug (with a sponge in it to soften the sound of the liquid pouring).
- The jug is sitting in a container with some clear water in it.
- The container has a pipe coming out of the side of it.
- As the blue liquid is poured into the funnel it fills up the jug that is sitting inside the icecream container.
- As the jug fills up it sinks into the container forcing the liquid out of the way.
- The liquid goes up around the sides of the jug and so is forced out of the pipe at the side of the container.
Have you noticed that when you get in the bath the level of the water rises? Well this is just the same thing - sort of! It's called displacement.
Thanks Mrs deVries for organising this experiment to get our brains ticking over.
Perhaps you could make a mystery box experiment.
